I’ve recently gotten rid of blogcatalog widgets from my sidebar too and have found it made a huge difference in load time (a whole second, from 1.6 seconds down to .6 seconds).

Lots of scripts, stat counters, social networks, and widgets will also slow your site down.
A good blog design will make sure your content loads first and ok even if all the other stuff takes a bit.

I’d have to say your host is a large factor in load time. Cheap oversold hosting is typically slow, not always from a bandwidth constraint, but a cpu % disk read/write constraint.

my blog is hosted on media temple. very fast host, not oversold.
