  • How to Promote Your Blog

Traffic is the lifeblood of your blog. Take a read of the official Blogger document “Promoting Your Blog”.

As suggested, you’ll want to make sure that you enable the setting to ping Weblogs.com. This means that each time you make a new post, Weblogs.com will be notified. Since many sites use Weblogs.com to check for blog updates, it’s a good idea to do this.

They also recommend submitting your blog to these sites:

    1. Technorati
    2. Daypop
    3. Blogdex
    4. Popdex

From time to time, keep looking for directories where you can submit your blog. Once your blog is listed, you will also get a backlink to your site. This will help to increase the PR of your site. With a couple of high PR sites, you’ll be able to get your new blogs indexed by the search engines a lot faster. Well now, you’re on your way to creating your own blog network.

  • Having A Subscriber List

If you don’t already have a subscriber list for your blog, you’ll have to seriously consider setting one up. The beauty of a subscriber list is that it lets you keep in touch with all your blog readers. Plus, you’ll be able to leverage your list to get repeat traffic to your blog.

There are many reasons to have a subscriber list. Among them are:

    1. Promote a free newsletter - you can write about tips on the topic of your blog. For example, if you’re blogging about money saving coupons, you can start a newsletter that provides weekly updates on ways to save money.

    2. Promote a paid newsletter - if you’re providing valuable information for free on your blog, you can also create a premium version of your newsletter which is by paid subscription. This is another way to monetize your blog aside from displaying ads.

    3. Promote affiliate products - if you find a particular product that is of interest to your blog readers, you can join the affiliate program and promote the product to your list. Make commissions.

    4. Not everyone has time to read your blog daily. You can send out updates on the latests posts on your blog. Something might catch the eye of your reader and remind them of your blog. That’s a way to get repeat traffic.

If you want to set up a subscriber mailing list, you can check out what I use for this blog. Just click on the “Email Aces” image below the subscription box on the right hand side.

You can’t get traffic unless people can find your blog.

One of the ways to get more people noticing your blog is submitting your blog to directories.

Here’s a list of places to submit your blog. If you create a feed from your blog using Feedburner, for example, there is also a list of places to submit your RSS feed.

  • Here’s an interesting read on the ongoing growth of blogging networks. There is a valid point in there. The cost of a reader switching over to a different blog is nearly zero. Unlike magazines or newspapers, a reader can easily switch to a different blog network if their interests are not met.

Clearly, the key is to maintain a steady and growing traffic to your blog. Especially if you’re going to make a living on blogging.

  • You can provide a search box using SearchFeed and earn money everytime someone searches for something. This is especially effective for product review type blogs. When someone visits your blog with the mindset of looking for a product and they can’t find it there, you provide a way for them to search for it on the same page.

What are the chances that they will use the search box to look for it?

  • I Fired My Blogger

Okay, so maybe that title will catch your attention. The fact is I’m the only blogger for this blog. But I do have other blogs which are in many other different niches. The problem now becomes - how do I keep up with all these blogs?

If you can cough up the cash, you can hire other people to maintain your blogs. That’s the model of Weblogs, Inc. Each individual blog on a highly specialized topic is maintained by a separate blogger who gets a portion of the revenues generated. But what’s a one-man operation to do?

There is a solution! Check out this script which allows you to upload a whole bunch of posts and lets you customize when you want to publish them to your blog. You can also grab news stories related to the topic of your blog from the gazillions of RSS news feeds out there. Be creative.

It’s like having your very own personal blogger working just for you.

    Affiliate Networks

If you haven’t already joined, be sure to enroll in Commission Junction today. It’s one of the best and most extensive affiliate networks. You can find many affiliate programs that will pay either based on commissions on sales or leads.

There are many well known companies that use Commission Junction to manage their affiliate programs. Ebay, New York Times, The Home Shopping Network, ING Direct … just to name a few.

Some of the pay per lead programs can be extremely lucrative and convert well. It’s generally easier to get a visitor to your site to sign up for information than to purchase a product.

Another advantage of Commission Junction is that you get paid with a single check every month even if you earn commissions from different vendors. This will greatly simplify your book-keeping.

There are other affiliate networks out there but you should definitely start with Commission Junction right away.
